Homemade York Peppermint Patties

When the holidays arrive each year there are many moments of temptation for a sweet treat.  My guard is up during this time of year, because I know that if I indulge and allow myself too many treats here and there that it will turn into an avalanche of sugar cravings, weight gain, getting sick and just feeling run down.  That is what sugar leaves me with.

So I’ve created loving boundaries during this time of year so I don’t feel deprived or left out of all the holiday cheer.  This allows me to feel good about my decision mentally while taking care of myself physically.

One loving upgrade is that on Christmas day I allow myself 3 sweet treats during that one meal at my mom’s.  I know (or at least for the past many years) my sister in-law will bring her cookies from the cookie exchange that she participates in.  I don’t have desserts during the other parts of the month because I know that on Christmas I will get to enjoy those three treats.  I usually regret it afterwards.

Another loving upgrade is that I make my favorite candy bar, which is a York Peppermint Patty.  It’s pretty easy to make and I can make it at home with little sugar and no chemicals.  I thought I’d share the recipe here with you.

Peppermint is great to have this time of year, or at least in my opinion. My homemade version may not be as pretty as the store bought one, but boy do they taste good.

Peppermint Patties
Makes 12 small patties


  • 1/4 cup coconut oil, divided
  • 3/4 tsp vanilla
  • 1 1/2 tsp raw honey
  • 1/4 tsp peppermint extract
  • 1 1/4 cup chocolate chips, 70% cocoa


  1. Mix 1/4 cup minus 1 tsp of coconut oil with the vanilla, honey and peppermint extract
  2. Line muffin tins with mini paper cups
  3. Divide peppermint mixture among the paper cups, set aside or put in the freezer for a few minutes
  4. Melt the chocolate and 1 tsp coconut oil over a double boiler on medium heat.  (I don’t have a double boiler, so I use two pots with water in between them
  5. Once chocolate is melted remove from the heat and spoon the chocolate on top of the peppermint mixture.  Making sure to cover it completely.
  6. Once covered store in the refrigerator until solid.  Enjoy
