AMAZING Homemade Grain Free Trail Mix

Granola can be such a great on-the-go snack.  With that being said, not all granola are treated equally. Many have grains in them (including oats) and loads of sugar.  Many also have nuts and seeds that were roasted at high heat or tainted refined oils.  

The healthy way to make granola is grain free, natural sweeteners and used in moderation. Even natural sweeteners will raise blood sugar levels.  

Also, sprouting your nuts and seeds is beneficial.  

WHY SPROUT?

Sprouting allows you to appreciate the maximum nutrient potential of the nuts and seeds you are eating. Raw nuts and seeds contain both enzymes and enzyme inhibitors. Roasted nuts and seeds kill both kinds of enzymes. Thankfully, sprouted nuts and seeds kill the enzyme inhibitors and actually activate the enzymes. So you get the most from every nut and seed you eat! Nuts sprout on the inside, so most of the time you won’t see a tail form in the sprouting methods discussed here.

There are a few ways to sprout your nuts and seeds.  I will be sharing the easiest and faster way.

Simple Sprouting Technique

In a large bowl, put your seeds and nuts.  Add water that will fully cover all of the seeds and nuts. Add a good amount of Sea Salt to the water and nuts.  Let soak over night. 8-12 hours.  Please note: nuts sprout on the inside, so you will not see a “tail” grow.

Drain and rinse in the morning.  To roast place them single layer on a cookie sheet and put in the oven (or use a dehydrator) at your lowest temperature.  Mine is 170˙ and leave for 10-12 hours until crispy and oh so delicious.

AMAZING Homemade Grain Free Trail Mix

Ingredients:

• 1.5 cups raw pecan pieces

• 2.5 cups silvered raw almonds

• 1 cup of raw pepitos seeds (pumpkin seeds)

• 1 cup organic dried fruit mix

• 1/4 cup hemp seeds

• 1/2 cup organic sunflower seeds

• 1/4 cup chia seeds

• 4 tbsp coconut oil

• 1/3 cup organic maple syrup

• 1 tsp organic vanilla extract

• 1-2 tsp cinnamon

• dash of nutmeg

• 1/2 tbsp vanilla

• 1/4 tsp sea salt

 

Directions:

1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. Mix well to coat maple syrup on dry ingredients.

3. Line a large baking pan with parchment paper. This will make clean up so much easier.

4. Spread out mixture on parchment paper.

5. Heat in oven for 15-20 min. Let cool and then store in a dry, airtight container.
